I initially thought the “Oh My God! J. Crew just turned this boy gay!” bruhaha over the new J. Crew ad to be lame, I now find it downright confusing.
Many people seem to be unable to look beyond stereotypes we grew up with, the idea that “It’s always been this way, so this way is Right”. Pink is for girls and blue is for boys. Hmmm, what if the kid wore purple, or green, or god forbid………….white. What could that do to a young developing mind that has NO FUCKING IDEA about pink is for girls and blue is for boys. Thank you Kirsten for this revealing link into gender appropriate colors. So I guess everyone my grandparent’s age are transgendered, however did we all get here?
The Christian Right (not be confused with Christians in general) seems to need a “crisis of the week”, possibly to keep up the idea that Christians are under attack and fighting a spiritual war on Earth, so vote for us or we’re all going to die. This seems to be this week’s addition to the “Homosexuals are evil, going to hell, and taking us with them” that seems to characterize an unfortunate attitude many Christians hold. Soon, someone else will “attack” their “way of life” by being gay, or pagan, or literate and this whole thing will go away.
I also happen to know that on the sly, lots of women have applied nail polish to their sons, generally in quiet situations where the son is watching the mother and expresses interest. Young boys put on dresses, women’s shoes, and raid their mother’s make-up. Young girls wear men’s shoes, ties, and slick their hair back. If these activities make transgendered people, there should be a LOT more transgendered people than the .3% of the 9% of Americans who are gay. It is how we try stuff out, try stuff on, and become comfortable with our selves.
Lots of men apply nail polish to themselves, it’s like body paint, a decoration, not to be confused with the surgical grafting onto the body of a vagina.
